At dusk
Down at the house on the corner I hear kids playing. Reminded me of this verse:
From Kids at Play
by Donald Petersen
On the playground, in the street,
Careless children gather heat.
In their skulls a crazy voice:
Eat fire, eat fire, or turn to ice.
Fire, fire, kingdom come
Booms in the sky like a big bass drum.
Hi diddle-diddle. Come what may,
Turn to ash and blow away.

Petersen is one of my favorite modern American poets. He deserves to be more widely known. (I guess a lot of poets do.) I don't know where he is today, but for many years he was a professor at Oneonta. Lucky students.

also, the students may have been lucky, but this poor poet wasn't. it is boring there. really boring. it's a beautiful area with a whole lot of nothing going on.
ah well.
