I think that our parent's generation was the last to hold the bonds of extended family tightly to them. Our generation is the one with continental drift, which transcends even proximity. I have two first cousins who live within twenty miles of here. I haven't seen either of them since I was in my late teens, nor do I have much inclination to look them up (nor they, me, apparently.)
It seems we make our own families now, based more of factors other than blood.
