Evening Light

A strange mauve glow bands the eastern horizon, shaded by dark blue tatters of cloud which break the washed out blue of evening sky. Sunset brought no color to the west this evening, and this inexplicable luminance in the east seems to emanate from the mountains themselves, as though they were etherializing, and their ghosts rolling out to engulf the forest. As I watch, the color rolls overhead like a glassy dome closing. It is a remarkable atmospheric phenomenon, and I'm going out to see what comes of it.

It might just be Zodiacal light. Naw...it's not some astrology nonsense...it's a genuine astronomical phenomenon. Check out the info here at the Astronomy Picture of the Day.

I think I can see that in the mornings sometimes, but this was in the evening. It's the wrong time of year for evening zodiacal light in the northern hemisphere. It was probably some accumulation of dust particles in the area, though I don't know from what source. Maybe there was a wind in the canyon stirring up ash left by the recent fires. There have been times when I've seen the trees in the canyons swaying while the air on the ridge is perfectly still. I've also had the experience of feeling only a slight breeze on the ground while the treetops have been roaring with high wind. The air currents do odd things around here.

Yes, the air currents are strange sometimes up there on the ridge. The ash could have added to the strangeness of the sky too. I remember when we had raging fires between the Skyway and Oroville that there were some really purple sunsets for a few days.
