Today, the power and the telephone were both out again. I'm not surprised at the power failure- they are routine here- but I don't know what the deal is with Pacific Telephone. Usually, their service is quite reliable.

But I think we can expect a further deterioration in our electric service. PG&E (Pacific Gas and Electric, or "Piggy," as it is unaffectionately known,) has let maintenance slide in recent months. The spikes in the wholesale price of power last winter drove it to the brink of bankruptcy, and they have made cutbacks everywhere. Ironically, the company that was making huge profits from those high prices, Enron, is now on the verge of collapse itself. Enron was more responsible for the revolution in power distribution than any other company. Once again, the revolution devours its children. A little too late for local customers, though.
