Sunset

This time of year, a common local weather pattern is for masses of clouds to build up over the mountain ranges, while the central valley remains fairly clear. In the evenings, looking out from the Sierra foothills, we see the light of the setting sun caught by the ice crystals in the clouds over the distant coast range. The ice refracts the red light, and creates some of the best sunsets of the year. The long wall of dusky rose, surmounted by the blue sky with a few still white clouds, all opening up beyond the low grey roof of nearer clouds, is quite spectacular. This is one of those times when I wish I had a decent camera and a scanner, so I could post pictures of this remarkable sight.
