Songbird is a free, open source web application with which you can download and play music on a PC. Their site says this:
"Songbird can play any popular music file format that is not DRM'ed. In the future we will be able to legally play DRM'ed file formats through APIs like the Windows Media Player API. We will also be able to play music played from the iTunes Music Store if Apple provides an API to their FairPlay DRM."
That's almost in English. Currently, they don't support any portable music devices, but they are working on it, so eventually you should be able to load it into an mp3 player. I don't know if the ipod will be one of those portable devices they will eventually support. Apple is pretty restrictive with its proprietary goods.
