rejectomorphHmph. My friends page opened, but I couldn't get any comment pages or the update page to open for a couple of hours. Even the LJ Status page wouldn't open, and that's located at an entirely different site with its own servers (it was probably overloaded with users trying to find out what was wrong.) I wonder what terrible, stupid thing they did this time? Maybe LJ needs a DeadJournal to keep in touch with its own users.
Anyway, while locked out, I got to visit other sites and found two oddities. Here's Dead Malls, a site (obviously) all about dead malls. For some reason, dead malls make me happy. Urbanite schadenfreude?
In a similar vein, but on the bizarre side, here's the Urban Dead Wiki. Here's what it's about:

Oops! Doing apreview of this post, Opera's spellcheck suddenly began seeing a bunch of Spanish words that I knew weren't in the post. I checked me text and found that something had added a bunch of Spamish Spanish at the bottom of the update box. WTF?! Virus? Trojan? Worm? On my computer? In LJ's code somewhere? I have no idea. I've deleted it and previewed again, and it looks to be truly gone. Weird.

that said...
I'm infatuated with dead malls and urban decay in general... the idea that this is America's replacement for the old market place and arcade has always bothered me... and yet, I'm drawn to 'living' malls like some anthropologist from the future. I love just watching the people in their matching, easily picked outfits shopping for more of the same...
Well, I love it the way a sheppard might love watching his flock run around the pastures in synchronized flight...

I had the good fortune of having my childhood and adolescence coincide perfectly with the decline of The Pike in Long Beach and Ocean Park on the border between Santa Monica and Venice. I got to watch them become dowdier and emptier each year until they finally were demolished. I would like to have seen them preserved in a state of suspended decay, but that was impractical. Both are now the sites of new developments. I don't know if I'll be around long enough to watch those decay, but even if I am, I doubt that their decline will be as interesting as was that of the amusement parks.

So all I'll say is, keep an eye out for Smudge.
