Took ibuprofen. It hasn't kicked in yet. I was hoping to keep the dose down to two a day at most, but I just went through several hours of excruciating pain waiting for four o'clock. The headache is still bad, and my jaw still hurts like hell, but the most distressing symptom now is the burning throat. Two possible things I've considered- either this is not just the result of the displaced atlas, or the fact that I can't swallow the pills whole and must let them dissolve and swallow the chunks. OK, my sentence structure just went to hell. I don't feel like fixing it.

I let Advil dissolve in my mouth. It sort of burns where it touches. That might be what is causing the burning in my throat and esophagus, which has continued for hours. Or this might actually be a throat infection of some sort, or maybe tetanus or something equally alarming. Or just my hypochondria returning. I suppose I should try to find a regular doctor and get a diagnosis, but no insurance would mean spending a nonexistent fortune for tests and crap.

Can't think clearly on too little sleep and too much pain. One of the most infuriating things is that, below the neck, I don't feel all that bad aside from some soreness and stiff joints. I could be out doing stuff if various parts of my head weren't trying to kill me.

Worst July ever. Worst entry ever.

I understand the nonexistent fortune/insurance dilemma... but how can you continue living in such agony? I'm assuming it doesn't feel like it could be connected to dental issues or you would have addressed that problem... It really sounds like you should see a doctor!

pain killers work differently on different people. ibuprofen does absolutely nothing for me. have you tried naproxen sodium? if it works it's better than ibuprofen anyway, because it's processed through the kidneys, whereas ibuprofen is (and with prolonged high doses can consequently damage) the liver.

if you can't swallow the pills whole, can you try crushing them within a teaspoon of sugar? that works with aspirin for young children, and the sugar might work as a buffering agent (i'm not sure, but kids don't seem to get sore throats with aspirin administered in this way).

i'm concerned by how long this pain is lasting.

Whatever you take, make sure it's slippery and drink plenty of water, DON'T let it dissolve in your mouth or throat. Do what you would for a cat (this works) hide the pill inside a glob of butter or cream cheese!
You should definitely see a doctor, you might have an infection, and swelling and pain in the neck area can be lymph nodes fighting something off. It can also, as in my husband's case, be lymphoma. Any purple blotches on the skin anywhere? Or tiny red blotches? Any fever? Don't assume it's the heat.
I thought my husband was being a hypochondriac (which he is and always has been) but that didn't mean he wasn't sick, when he finally was. Denial is pretty powerful, too.
And you HAVE ruled out dental problems? My husband looked the same with a bad dental infection as he did when he got Lymphoma. Minus the purple blotches, of course. Jaundice, swelling, fever, etc. Inability to turn the head.
Blood work is in order.

You poor thing. Sorry, nothing constructive, just sympathy. Here, I'll even toss in an emoticon: :(
