Some friends of mine have apparently been victims of a virus hoax. Or maybe not. Someone has started a chain of e-mail which informs people that their computers may be infected with a latent virus, and that a particular file should be deleted. The problem is, the SULFNBK file is part of the Windows system, and may or may not be infected. A lot of people are apparently deleting the file for no good reason. More information on the hoax in this Sophos Article: SULFNBK: Virus or Hoax . . .or both?"

Yup...I was taken in.

M-m-m, yes...I was one of those who got that "warning" from one of my email correspondentents... AND, I deleted the SULFNBK.exe...only to recieve an email about 3 minutes later from another person on his multiple sending list informing me (us) that it was a hoax! Thank goodness I didn't send out this warning to all of my email correspondents! I was able to restore SULFNBK.exe (whatever it is) though.

It's a file that restores and backs up information about "long file names" -- for example, if you have a file that is named "Von Schmecken.txt", Windows knows that file as something like "vonsch~1.txt" (for a variety of obscure technical reasons). For Windows to be able to remember the longer name, it uses SULFNBK.EXE.

... I work on a computer help desk, and about 1/5 of the calls I took last week were about the SULFNBK.EXE virus hoax

In the event that SULFNBK.EXE was deleted erroneously, the following method may be used to restore the file from backup:

-- Windows 98 Instructions --

1) Click START - RUN, type SFC and hit ENTER
2) In the "Specify the system file you would like to restore" field, type C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\SULFNBK.EXE and hit ENTER
3) In the RESTORE FROM field, type in the path to your WINDOWS CAB files
(ie. C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS)
(ie. D:\WIN98 where D is the drive letter assigned to your CD-ROM)
4) Click OK and continue with the restore function

-- End Windows 98 Instructions --

-- Windows ME Instructions --

1) Click START - RUN, type MSCONFIG and hit ENTER
2) Click the Extract Files button
3) In the "Specify the system file you would like to restore" field, type C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\SULFNBK.EXE and hit ENTER
4) In the RESTORE FROM field, type in the path to your WINDOWS CAB files
(ie. C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\INSTALL)
5) Click OK and continue with the restore function

-- End Windows ME Instructions --
