Misting on and off, and the pines dripping, and the intermittent light of the moon reflected in the wet pavement. It was impossible to see the shade of the moon change, as it was hidden again and again by the drifting veils of cloud, but, in those moments when it shone through thinner clouds or was revealed altogether, the shadow along the edge was noticeable. Just a slight flattening. A pleasant night, none the less. No more than a sweater needed against the chill. I could almost imagine myself back south of the Tehachapi Mountains.

On this side of the continent

Out earlier this morning, around 6 or so, about an hour before dawn. Very cold and clear...no clouds at all...as clear a sky as we ever get in these parts...The moon was low in the western sky; a few degrees above the horizon framed by the wooded hillsides of the Orange mountains. Perfectly full and greatly magnified by the denser accumulation of atmosphere through which it appeared, its blue shadowy "face" looked out upon the world with an expression that seemed a mixture of surprise and sadness touched with bemusement. With it, gleaming brightly, just above and slightly to the left, was Jupiter.

Being Sunday, the usual rushing noises of man's business that accompanies this hour on any other day of the week were stilled to utter silence. The rare coinsidences that made this moment stopped and held me in their cold embrace while my mind began to follow shunned but insistant connective thoughts of the true insignificance, aloneness and brevity of time past, present and whatever future is left. As beautiful as the scene before me was, I soon hurried on about my morning.

Here in Michigan, the moon cast it's light on three inches of snow last night. It was quite cold, in the mid-teens, and fast moving wispy clouds were passing low.

A wonderful winter's night.
