It was just too balmy for words today. The picture was taken in April of 2005, but this is what will be happening in March this year. The blossoms are emerging now, and it's going to be sneezing time for the next couple of weeks as the pollen spews forth. Then the leaves will sprout, and there will be shade soon thereafter. Just in time, I'll bet.

Your octopus metaphor is more apt than you probably realize. Underground, these trees send roots out through fifty or sixty feet of dry ground in search of water, which is not the case with most shade trees. They are very destructive and can damage not only pavements but building foundations. They grab everything they reach. They can break open water and sewer pipes, too.

But they produce a dense canopy of fat leaves, so they do make a fine shade. Just don't plant one near anything it can damage. This one is actually much to close to my house, and I ought to get rid of it, but I've never gotten around to it. Someday it will cause trouble, I know.
