There are more birds around here now, especially crows. They must be refugees from the burned areas. It wouldn't surprise me to see a crow war. It wouldn't surprise me to see an epidemic of West Nile Virus. It wouldn't surprise me to find that I've already got West Nile Virus and that's why I'm so tired all the time.

The details in the full-sized version of this photo of a Washington D.C. drug store in 1920 are fascinating. Hornung's Corn Paint, bed bug killer, and guaranteed rubber goods! They just don't have these things at our local Walgreen's!

I'm watering the jasmine every night in hope that this may produce a fresh crop of flowers. It worked on the gardenias out front. I'd much rather smell jasmine than gardenia.

those are wonderful photos of the People's Drugs! for the first 15 years or so that i lived near DC, People's was THE drugstore in the area. now it's been swallowed up by CVS, not an advance. my hometown in indiana had a drugstore a great deal like the one in the photos, though much smaller. it was dark and murky and smelled like medicine, and you could get a killer cherry phosphate at the counter, with marshmallow goo!

When I was a kid, California still had a "fair trade law" which prohibited drug stores from giving large discounts on merchandise. This had the effect of keeping loads of small neighborhood stores that couldn't afford to give heavy discounts competitive with the chains, and in the older areas there would be a drug store or two at most major intersections, meaning almost everybody lived within less than half a mile of one. The smaller of the two nearest the first house I lived in was no bigger than a two car garage, but it still had a tiny soda fountain until I was about five years old.

My favorite fountains were those of the chain Rexall Drug stores, though. They had the best malts ever, and a pleasant concoction called a lime ricky, consisting of simple syrup, the juice of a fresh lime, soda water, and a maraschino cherry, all over crushed ice in a glass of about ten ounces, and with half the squeezed lime tossed in as extra garnish.

These cost half again as much as a bottled soft drink from the coolers all the neighborhood markets and every corner gas station sported, but it was a unique drink and you got to watch the waitress make it fresh right in front of you. Totally worth the price.

oh, yes, rexall! we had two drug stores in my little town, a rexall, which was large and modern, and Poe's, a family-run one that was (as i described it above) dark and old-fashioned.

the rexall had the good magazines that you could read if you were sneaky, a better jukebox, and the first microwave oven i ever saw, for heating hot dogs and such. this photo was taken there when i was a bit younger than i am now. i liked their ice cream. :)

both drug stores were destroyed when main street burned back in 1968.

It looked very busy in the 1950s. Was the two-story white building just past the corner on the right a movie theatre? That looks like a theatre marquee out front, though there's no visible name on it.

i was mistaken, btw, about it being before my time. i was born in '51, so that's smack in the middle of my childhood. :)

yes, there was a theater there off and on over the years. it never lasted too long, but OH the movies i saw there! Oklahoma, West Side Story, Blue Hawaii. i liked to sit in the very front row. *g*

Do you recall the name of the theatre? Jasonville has no theatres listed at Cinema Treasures yet, and with a little more information I could add it to the site's database. An address would be good, though not essential, and maybe a brief description. In the 1998 photo it looks as though the building might still be there, though minus its upper floor.

oh dear, i don't remember. i paid 25 cents to see each of those old movies (gone with the wind!), but the name? can't remember. i'll ask my brother and sister if they have better memories. unfortunately, both mom and dad are gone. she'd have known all about it.

i can offer up the Cine in Linton, just about 20 minutes down the road. Cine. i saw plenty of movies there, and at the drive-in (drive-in). linton's claim to fame is Phil Harris. (phil and i share a birthday!)
