There's a cricket hanging around in our garage, but it isn't chirping. I see it when I go out to do laundry at night, but I never hear it. The crickets outside are filling the night with their chirps, as omnipresent as the scent of the jasmine. Night's coolness is a relief, and as much a pleasure as the insect music and the floral bouquet. Each day is growing a bit hazier and, though not as hot as the days June is about to bring will probably be, May's last week has brought an unaccustomed mugginess that makes the heat more oppressive.

Thunder storms are reported in the mountains, but their sound has not reached me. Thus far there are no reports of lighting fires. The two days of possible rain predicted for here for been changed from Tuesday and Wednesday to Wednesday and Thursday. This storm is taking its time. Apparently this system has been pushing across the southwestern deserts and mountains, and originated in the Gulf of Mexico. It's apt to be drained of most of its water by the time it gets here.

I now believe the house next door contains a portal to another dimension, from whence the renters are getting all the stuff they keep moving out. The giant dumpster that was delivered to the house across the street a couple of days ago, which I thought indicated that they were about to undertake some major renovation or perhaps get a new roof, was apparently placed there as a favor to the moving renters who lacked space for such a contrivance in their own driveway. This afternoon they carted multiple items across the street and dumped them there. Will it ever end? Oh, and the black and white kitty is still here. The suspense is irritating me.

A most unnerving caption graces this photo from the L.A. Metro's Dorothy Peyton Gray Archives photostream at Flickr. In fact, it refers merely to the final day of service on the Glendale streetcar line, before it was converted to buses, but at first reading the thought which came to my mind was the trolley to Hell! It was a handsome trolley, though, sporting Pacific Electric's striped mohair upholstery and some very nice moderne light fixtures. I'd have taken that ride had I gotten the chance.

Need to get a shower quickly, before my mom wakes up and the drama resumes. And I hope I get to spend a few minutes with black and white kitty tonight. She'll be very disappointed if she doesn't see me.

that gallery piece sounds too scary for words! poor little kids. *g* i miss the '80s too.

i googled for "spiggot" and found the first hit to be a photo of one unfortunate mr. spiggot being disemboweled by torturers. ahhh, not quite what i have in my house. yikes.
spider cricket

if you steal the tardis and get it running, you can go anywhere in time! remember the old steven wright joke about the "breakfast anytime" sign in a restaurant window? he went in and ordered french toast in the renaissance. :D
