Black widow season has begun. Last night I was walking across the garage when I saw something from the corner of my eye. I stopped and looked carefully, and saw a black widow climbing a strand of silk about two feet from my head. Had I walked in a slightly different direction I'd have run right into her before seeing her. I got a broom and smacked at her with it, but didn't see where she ended up.

Today I inspected the garage door and saw three more black widows trying to hide themselves in various corners of the workings. I think I slaughtered all three with the broom, but I can't be sure. They scurry fast when they want to and, I'm convinced, make themselves invisible as well as cats do. As always, non-venomous spiders are welcome to share my space, but black widows must go.

Aside from arachnids who want to murder me (and vice-versa) the season is nice. Lots of golden poppies have come out, and the cala lilies are doing well. Have you ever noticed that when saying "cala lilies" everybody sounds like Tom Brokaw?

I don't think the dust from the Icelandic volcano has circumnavigated the earth yet, because sunset was nothing special. I can hardly wait for it to get here and make the evenings lurid! I hope it arrives before a black widow kills me.
