More of the Same

The string of sultry days continues, bringing brown fields and filling the air with the scent of dried grass and heated pine resin. The insects buzz day and night. Tonight, the perfume of the jasmine is accompanied by the faint smell of skunk. Both add interest to the atmosphere, but I do prefer the jasmine. It doesn't remind me of road kill.

Tomorrow Today or Sunday I'll have to go grocery shopping again. Eating is the bane of my existence. If not for hunger, I'd never have to venture into a supermarket, the only redeeming characteristic of which experience is that the buildings are air conditioned. Well, the fact that they also sell beer is redeeming, too, I suppose, but I long for a beer tap in my kitchen— one connected to an endless supply of my favorite beverage, so I wouldn't even have to venture forth to fetch kegs. Why is beer not provided by a public utility? The world is all wrong!

A beer tap would be a terrible idea! Imagine how stale and flat the beer would be after running all that way through the pipes. I can tell you that looking after beer piping in a pub is an arduous and time consuming job, with lots of flushing, rinsing and cleaning every week.

Perhaps you could get into home brewing? It's very easy, and the quality from a good kit is far better than all but the best commercial beers. I've got a couple of crates of stout aging under the house, and after nearly a year the flavour is extraordinary.

I was assuming that magic would be used to keep the beer fresh. California already runs almost entirely on magic. That's the only plausible explanation for the state's survival thus far. Compared to keeping the transportation system running or patching the annual budgets, or preventing San Francisco from drifting out to sea, or the San Joaquin Valley from sinking back into Hell, a magical beer tap should be easy.
