Fudgesicles. I haven't had Fudgesicles in years. They were on sale and I couldn't resist the opportunity to regress to childhood for such a low price. Alas that I have no slides or swings. There are trees to climb, of course, but my joints failed to regress with my mind and I'd be foolish to try climbing one. Nor is the Portia, though an excellent feline companion, a substitute for Sparky, the dog of my childhood, who has been dead now for over half a century. Not to mention that all my friends of that time are gone or have been scattered to the winds.

But to dwell on these changes would be an invitation to melancholy, which is not a good accompaniment to Fudgesicles. I think I'll just un-regress and lick one while watching cable. Oh, wait. I said un-regress, didn't I. Fine. I'll read a book. There'll still be the Fudgesicles.

Fudgesicle is the brand name for a chocolate-flavored frozen confection on a stick, made by the Popsicle company. The Internet tells me that the British equivalent of a Popsicle is called an ice lolly. The Popsicle company refers generically to its own products and to competing brands as ice pops, but in many parts of the U.S. the brand name Popsicle has long since become the public's standard generic term for all frozen, non-diary confections on sticks— except, interestingly enough, for the Fudgesicle.

The portmanteau brand name Popsicle comes from what is probably another Americanism (though it's not nationwide), "pop" for a sweet, non-alcoholic drink, and the word icicle. I'm not sure when the company added the Fudgesicle to its line, but it's been available for as long as I can remember. The earliest Popsicles were all fruit-flavored. The Popsicle company also makes something called a Creamsicle, which is vanilla ice cream inside a coating of fruit-flavored Popsicle.
