It's still cricket season, but the first cicadas will soon begin their infernal screech. Meanwhile I'm enjoying the nights of soft chirps while they last. The fact is that each year the cicadas make me a little bit crazier. The most infuriating annoyance is the one you can't do anything about. If only there were more creatures who found cicadas tastier, and were good at catching them. The paucity of such creatures is a serious flaw of the local ecosystem. I wonder if I could get a bat colony to move into my attic? Better to have bats than to be driven batty.

See? The cicadas aren't even here yet and I'm already showing signs of craziness from the anticipation alone. Cicadas are evil!

a few years ago we hit the point in the 17-year cycle where the area was crazy with those things. i took photos of their shells clinging to the walls of the porch. a local newsman went on tv with footage of an entomologist cooking them in butter and eating some. omg. bon appetit!

the din, of course, was intense for a while. if there are just the usual yearly few, i kind of like the sound. it reminds me of being a little kid on a hot summer night.

California doesn't get the long-cycle cicadas, only the annulars, so I've never experienced a huge swarm. I don't recall ever hearing cicadas at all when I lived in Southern California, even though when I was a kid we still had some open fields nearby. They're quite plentiful in the north, though. When they start to die off in the fall I usually find a dozen or so wriggling in the sink on my back porch every morning.

Every 17th year in the east must be like Mardi Gras for all the little creatures who eat insects.

So that's what they're doing when they crash into light bulbs. They want to break them and send us back to the dark ages!
