Growing

This afternoon I noticed that I now have a partial view of my next door neighbor's hammock from my back porch when I'm sitting in my chair. If I recall correctly, the hammock was put in a dozen or more years ago by a previous tenant of the house. It is attached to two trees; a ponderosa and a fir. When it was put in, it was no more than three feet above the ground, but the trees have grown and it is now high enough that I can see one end of it over my fence even when I'm sitting down. The end attached to the ponderosa must be more than six feet above the ground, but the end attached to the fir is only a bit over five feet up. The fir hasn't grown as fast as the ponderosa.

I don't recall the last time I saw anyone using the hammock, but it must have been quite a while. Its distance above the ground would make it almost impossible for anyone to get onto it, and anyone falling from it would risk injury. In fact I'm now thinking of it as a Johnny Knoxville hammock, and I'll be keeping an eye out for any jackasses who might turn up and try to use it. Oh, I do hope I get to see that.

Weather underground tells me the weekend will be cool, and the clouds will be returning. The cold weather being pushed back to at least mid-October has been a good thing. This month's utility bill will probably not be much more than last month's. If my luck holds, the bill that comes in November won't be too much bigger. The longer the furnace can be left off, the happier I'll be.

It's cool here. My flatmate insists on having the heating on, which often means I'm walking around in a t-shirt. Crazy.
