rejectomorphAll the snow has been washed away, and the sun reappeared today, but the air has remained very cold. In fact we were half a degree above a record low for the date last night, and the dish of water I keep on the back porch for the feral cats froze. It will freeze again tonight, and tomorrow night. Saturday afternoon more rain is expected, and it will probably turn into snow overnight. I hope this doesn't turn out to be one of those years when another storm comes through every few days. I don't like those years.
There was a very nice sunset, though, and a huge line of geese flew over before it had faded. There must have been more than a hundred of them, all in one broad, wavering line. Geese can't seem to keep a decent "V" formation going when the flock gets beyond a certain size. Some goose down the line is always trying to move ahead and take over the lead spot, and then the actual leader will veer in the other direction from the usurper, forcing that section of the flock toward the new rear position. It's a wonder the whole flock doesn't end up flying in circles as a result of these competitions. I wonder if a flock ever divides into two in mid flight, with one of the challengers veering at a different angle than the original leader, taking a section of the line with him?
Anyway, I don't get to fly away to a warmer place. I'm stuck here, wearing a sweater and a hoodie, and still burning gas to stay barely warm. But for once I haven't much cause to wish I still lived in Southern California. The zip code I used to live in will tonight be only three degrees warmer than it will be here. Sunny California my shivering arse!
