One of the things I dislike about this time of year is that the nightcrawlers come out in large numbers. The nightcrawlers themselves don't bother me. It's when I go outside after dark to enjoy the moon or the stars or the drifting clouds or (tonight) the fog, and suddenly hear that loud crunch underfoot indicating that I've just crushed a worm. That's disgusting.

You just can't see those things in the dark unless you constantly shine a flashlight on your path. If I wanted to look at the ground I could just stand on the porch. I like to move around while I look at the sky. Squashing nightcrawlers detracts somewhat from the experience.

So I just ruined a perfectly good stroll through the fog, twice. Why don't worms just stay underground where they belong? Stupid nightcrawlers.

What kind of nightcrawlers "crunch" when you step on them? Ours go "squish".
