It very nearly came down to me turning on the air conditioner today. There's a humid haze making a white halo for the sun, and the air seems so thick that it feels as though the ground itself is sweating. The feral kittens are practically comatose, draped over the chaise lounge, which can't be a very comfortable place because it has plastic upholstery. I'll want nothing to do with the outdoors until it's no hotter out there as it is in here, which is currently eighty degrees. It must still be ninety outside.

All I had for dinner was a tuna sandwich (not a tuna fish sandwich, mind you, as, to my knowledge, there is no such thing a non-fish variety of tuna, at least in English, and the redundancy irritates me) because I didn't want to ignite so much as a single burner on the stove. Maybe I'll fry a potato later.

The front lawn is turning a bit green, but despite all the water I've poured on it over the last few days the back lawn remains a dismal, thatchy brown. I wonder if all the gopher tunnels in the front lawn are actually taking water to the lawn's roots? Maybe instead of trying to rid the front yard of gophers I ought to try to get a few of them to move into the back yard.

I've been in an eighties mood all afternoon.

oh, i loved ice house and echo and the bunnymen! i bought Measure for Measure on vinyl 33 and listened a lot, but now i mostly remember "no promises," which i consider gorgeously romantic. (iva davies looked good in the video too, mullet and all. here's my iva davies icon. *g*) "Killing Moon" is a classic, and i liked bryan ferry's "Slave to Love" and "Don't Stop the Dance." i blip all those guys! [edited to eliminate some redundancy. *g*]

YouTube has been great for jogging my memory of the music of other decades. For example, I'd totally forgotten about Chris Rea until I stumbled across him at YouTube the other day.

Plus I've been finding music from Johnny Hates Jazz, Double, Tears for Fears, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, The Dream Academy, Crowded House, Psychedelic Furs... all sorts of interesting stuff, including my favorite Prefab Sprout song, in a live recording from an English television show I'd probably never have seen elsewhere. Paddy McAloon wrote some remarkable lines. "Fall, be free as old confetti, and paint the town...." One of the best autumn images I've ever heard, and the connotations it picks up in the context of the song make it even richer.

I also found this live acoustic version of On the Avenue by Roddy Frame. I wish somebody would upload the version he did with Aztec Camera on the Jools Holland Show, which I saw a few years ago on BBC America. A classic performance, if memory doesn't deceive me.

Tears for Fears was my #1 group (hence the roland orzabal icon up above!). roland's voice was amazing. i'm blipping "ladybird" right now, from their recent reunion album.

i didn't know any of those three songs, interestingly enough. maybe they weren't on mtv much. (i watched hours & hours of videos back when mtv actually had videos, many very artful.)

Double! i bought their album on cassette and nearly wore it out. "captain of her heart" is a song i'll always want to hear.

When I first moved to Butte County in 1986, there was an independently-owned local radio station (since swallowed by a big radio conglomerate, alas) with a stable of DJs who had adventurous and eclectic tastes.

They played all the most popular bands, but several of them were also fans of rather obscure English (and other) bands, so I heard quite a bit of Chris Rea, Prefab Sprout, and Aztec Camera. I don't think any of those performers got much airplay in most of the U.S., but here we heard them daily.

I miss the old KFMF. I was surprised to find it when I moved here, as it put the stations in Los Angeles to shame. Now it sounds just like them, because its programming originates from the same corporate headquarters studio. All the local engineers have to do is cue up a few local ads and weather reports to roll at the pre-selected moments. Broadcast radio is really the pits these days.

here near dc, we had WHFS, a fabulous station that was independently owned. it was shocking what happened -- the owner sold it, not telling the guys doing the on-air noon show, which suddenly in mid-show switched to El Zol, 24-hour spanish-language programming. everyone was stunned. it was a serious loss. i don't listen to anything but classical on the radio now, or news.

That sort of sudden, unannounced change has never been rare in the radio business. I've had friends in radio who found themselves jobless only on arriving at work.

I've given up listening to broadcast radio altogether, except when there's a local emergency of some sort. The last time I had my radio on was three years ago when we had the forest fires and had to evacuate this side of town. For music I've got CDs and Internets and, once in a while, television, and my news comes from the newspaper or Internet or, rarely, television.

By the way, there's another video of Captain, made by a fan, probably from the album track, and about half a minute longer than the official video (which I think had a bit edited from the middle to make it shorter for the television channels that ran it.) You don't get to see Kurt's baby blue eyes, but there's some nice scenery of the beach, and the audio doesn't cut off abruptly at the end.

that is nice! my parents used to take us kids to florida on vacations, so that beach looks very welcoming to me. thank you!
