The Buzz

A fly got into the house when Portia discovered that she could pop the screen out of one of the windows and escape. The screen had probably been off for at least a couple of hours before I discovered that it was open. That was a week ago. The fly has been here ever since. I thought it would be dead by now, but I guess flies are more resourceful than I'd imagined. I've swatted at it dozens of times, but it always manages to escape. I'm beginning to think that the fly is not an actual fly, but some sort of demon disguised as a fly.

Or maybe it's a robot fly belonging to a secret government agency that spies on people, and the agency has mistaken me for someone of importance and sent its expensive robot fly here to discover what I'm up to. If that's the case, maybe I shouldn't try to swat the fly. Maybe I should try to capture it and hold it for ransom, or threaten to sell it to the Chinese government. Actually, I'd be willing to just give it to the Chinese government, if they can tell me how to capture it. I just want to be rid of the damned thing. The buzzing is driving me crazy.

If the fly is a robot, then I must consider the possibility that science, and the technology based upon its laws, are frauds— that robots and other gadgets actually work not by scientific law, but by magic, and that this terrible secret is protected by a mysterious cabal that controls all technology.

If this is true, then the robot fly must actually have a demon in it, conjured there and enslaved by the dark arts of the scientist/magicians. Indeed, all technological devices must have demons in them!

Only the Masons could possibly be behind so vast and cunning a conspiracy, and this can mean only one thing:

I must join the Masons!
