Mystery Calling
Sep. 9th, 2011 03:05 pmThere's some guy climbing the utility pole in front of my house. He doesn't have a bucket truck, but an ordinary pickup truck, with no name on the door panels. He isn't wearing climbing gear and spiked shoes. He has a long, rather unstable-looking ladder leaning against the pole, and he's climbing that. This is the second time in a couple of weeks that this has happened, with two different guys.
The only companies that I know of who use the utility poles are PG&E, which has its electrical lines on it; Comcast, which has its coaxial cable on it; and AT&T, which has its telephone cables on it. In the past, when anybody was climbing that pole it was somebody in a truck from one of those three companies. Now it's like amateur day.
I haven't heard of any of those companies suddenly deciding to hire outside contractors to work for them. As far as I know, no franchises have been issued for, say, Bob's Telephone Company, or People's Cable Service, Inc., or Northeast Neighborhood Power & Light LLC. If such companies existed, I'd think they'd at least want to put their names on the door panels of their trucks anyway.
Still, it would be great if those companies did exist. After dealing with AT&T's escalating prices and declining service for so many years, I just might consider going with Bob's Telephone Company, name on their truck's door panels or not. Although since there have been two different guys in two different trucks, maybe it would actually be something like Bob & Al's Telephone Company. If they add a third partner, named Moe, I'm subscribing!

Date: 2011-09-10 08:42 pm (UTC)Or it might be that Bob and Al are installing illegal cable connections, and my next door neighbor is now stealing television. Bob (or Al) was in her house for the better part of an hour yesterday.
The possibilities are endless. Bob and Al might be aliens! Or ghosts! Or mutant squirrels who look like humans!
Maybe I should move.
