The Big Wet

The rain arrived while I slept, and the waterfall cascading from the roof into the flower bed by the front door reminded me that I had failed to clean out the rain gutters. So far nothing is dripping from my ceiling, but it won't be long, I'm sure. It's going to rain all night, and off and on tomorrow, and probably the next two days as well. Each day will be colder than the last, but the snow level will remain well above our elevation. I'm glad we're getting a head start on next year's water supply, but distressed that furnace season has begun so soon.

My favorite part of the day so far was about ten o'clock this morning, when the clouds settled earthward and filled the street with fog. I could barely see the trees a hundred feet away. Wind later sent them back to the sky where they now hang their delightful gloom. The lawn has not yet begun to turn green, of course, but the moss on the mulberry tree and on the walk under it has rapidly turned lush where a few days ago it was sere.

I'm going to heat some soup for lunch, and make some garlic toast of a stale roll I failed to eat last week. Tomorrow I have an appointment with the chiropractor, so will have to go out into whatever weather the afternoon offers. Today I intend to enjoy being indoors, despite having the thermostat set at 64 degrees. I'm going to read for a while after lunch, wrapped in a big, fuzzy blanket which I will share with a cat. All I really lack is a pair of mittens with one finger hole for turning pages.

We have rain and chill up here, too. I'll gradually learn West Coast weather patterns. Brrr, had to have the heat on during my shower. (The heating system in this apt. is essentially like space heaters in the wall -- you turn up the thermostat in a room and out blasts hot air. Weird.)

The fog must've been lovely. I do like looking at fog.

I'd love to have an independent heater in my bathroom. Having to either close and then later reopen a bunch of floor registers, or to heat four rooms just to get one of them warm enough for a shower, is one of the most annoying things about winter.

Yeah, you'll get lots of rain and winter chill in Seattle, but probably few, if any, big storms with extended, California-style downpours. And probably little, if any, snow, either.

I enjoyed the reading, but the cat didn't. She ended up going over to nap on the cable box after a few minutes.
