Still No Pants

No, I didn't get around to going to Chico today. Stuff came up. As it often does. So I spent half an hour sitting in the front yard in the sunshine with a soft breeze faintly scented with lilac. There is still no shade from the mulberry tree. The leaves are still quite small. Soon they will grow very large and thick. They shade my window from the hot afternoon sun of summer. This is the only reason I keep this tree.
The fruitless mulberry was planted by a previous owner of the house, back in the days when planting this variety of tree in suburban yards was thought to be a good idea. It grows very fast, and suits the impatience of the transitory suburban population. But it is a bad tree. It is a relentless seeker of water, and, unlike most trees, will even send its roots under pavements and the foundations of houses in search of moisture. It will burrow into sewers and septic tanks and even break open water pipes. In short, it is an aggressive little bugger. This particular tree is probably far enough from anything that could be damaged that we don't have to worry about it. And it gets a lot of water because it is on the lawn. But still, I'd like to replace it with something else. Maybe a pecan, which would provide nuts for the birds and squirrels.
Someday I'll get around to it. That, and a million other things. Such as getting some new pants!
