The heat grows more intense, and afternoons are a dazed time. When evening arrives with its cooling breezes, I'm already exhausted. All I can do is sit on the back porch and listen to the crickets. The cicadas are buzzing now, too, which is a less appealing development. Cicadas are like raw nerves in my ears. In a few weeks they will be loud and inescapable. Arid August slouches toward September, which is apt to be as arid. I only hope it won't be as hot.

I'd like cicadas better than my tinnitus, I bet, but that's not saying much. It's a sound I associate with childhood and safety, probably.

Sure hope you get a cooling trend!

I don't remember ever having heard cicadas when I was a kid. Maybe the climate of Los Angeles doesn't suit them.
