Fruitless

It turns out that the rain did start to regenerate the sourgrass. Most of the plants have a few green stalks in the middle of the brown mass of dead stalks and leaves. As long as we get a bit more rain every few days, or baring that if I remember to water it a bit, and the temperatures remain mild, the plants will probably recover quite soon. There could be little purple flowers any day now. I like when autumn brings reminders of spring.

Last Sunday I almost bought a pomegranate, but decided not to as I was a bit short of cash. Now I'm wishing I had one. It is a good night for pomegranate, with the air crisp and fresh, and lots of stars shining. The waning crescent moon won't be up for quite a while. I'll probably fall asleep by the time it comes up, as I slept too little last night. I've been dragging for the last hour. A tangy-sweet pomegranate might have helped liven me up. Alas, I have no pomegranate, nor any other fruit save two oranges which I intend to have as breakfasts. I guess I'll have to settle for some of that excess ice cream I've got hanging around.

Right now, in fact, before I start nodding off. Gee, I miss being totally nocturnal.

I have some Klondike bars and three flavors of Dreyer's ice cream— butter pecan, French vanilla, and mocha almond fudge. Plus I've got about a dozen fruit bars.

Pomegranates are actually huge berries with a thick skin and filled with hundreds of seeds. Each seed is surrounded by a translucent red pulp that is juicy and tangy and moderately sweet. That's the part that's edible, but the seeds are tough and fibrous. Some people eat the seeds, but I don't, so eating a pomegranate is tedious business. I like them anyway.

My mom never got us pomegranates when I was a kid because the juice stains clothes, and you can't eat a pomegranate without getting at least a few drops of juice on you. But I had a friend whose back-fence neighbors had a pomegranate tree, and the tree hung over the fence, so every fall we would be able to pick pomegrantes in my friend's back yard. I'd try my best not to get any juice on my clothes, but I usually did, and my mom would find it and chew me out for it. But it was worth it. Free fruit, almost stolen! It's a boy's dream!

She ate the seeds! I bite the arils one at a time and spit the seeds out. It takes forever, of course, but I hate chewing the seeds. That's why I don't like pomegranate in salads.

I've seen those berries in things, composed dishes and salads, but have no idea what they actually taste like. Must try, now that I know how!

Mmmm, mocha almond fudge sounds great.
