Again with the split shift sleeping. I brought home a donut, and about six o'clock sat down on the couch to eat it, and the next thing I knew I was waking up with Portia untying my shoelace. At first I thought it was Sunday morning, and then I remembered going shopping and thought it was Monday morning, but when I finally looked at the clock, and my brain had un-fogged enough to figure the situation out, I realized it was only eleven o'clock Sunday evening. But, as usual after a five-hour evening nap, it feels like morning, and what am I doing writing a journal entry? I probably won't be fully awake for another couple of hours, and I haven't even had dinner yet.

I spent way too much money at the store, though the donut was only fifty cents. When I was a kid, old people would still sometimes say "I'll bet you a nickel to a donut." That's because donuts still cost a nickel when I was a kid. I remember when they raised the price to six cents. Outrage! The regular price at Safeway is now 69 cents, so the fifty cent donut was a real bargain. I'll bet you fifty cents to a sale=priced donut that eventually people will be saying "I'll bet you a dollar to a donut." What we shall have lost in currency value we shall have gained in alliteration.

My brain is very weird when my sleep schedule goes pear-shaped.

Sunday Verse

Inscription For The Ceiling Of A Bedroom

Dorothy Parker

Daily dawns another day;
I must up, to make my way.
Though I dress and drink and eat,
Move my fingers and my feet,
Learn a little, here and there,
Weep and laugh and sweat and swear,
Hear a song, or watch a stage,
Leave some words upon a page,
Claim a foe, or hail a friend-
Bed awaits me at the end.

Though I go in pride and strength,
I'll come back to bed at length.
Though I walk in blinded woe,
Back to bed I'm bound to go.
High my heart, or bowed my head,
All my days but lead to bed.
Up, and out, and on; and then
Ever back to bed again,
Summer, Winter, Spring, and Fall-
I'm a fool to rise at all!

We used to say "dollars to doughnuts" when I was a kid (60 years ago now) in New England. So this would be more than one doughnut to more than one dollar, I guess. It's the alliteration.
