New Old

Diddling about with a new computer today (a new old computer) but I'm not using it yet, just testing it. Windows 7 is going to take some getting used to. I won't be able to use my copy of Opera 12.17 on it, which could be a problem. I downloaded Opera 21 for testing, and it turns out to be, essentially, Chrome. If I want Chrome I'll download Chrome. If I can't get an older version of Opera to work on the new (old) computer, I'll have to make Firefox my default browser. But I'm hoping Opera 15 (the oldest version that the new (old) computer will work with) is a non-Chromy version.

Anyway, the diddling about took up much of the day, and there will be more diddling tomorrow, so I won't be around much. The whole process was very tiring and now I just want to eat something and sit in front of the television and fall asleep. Computers are tedious.

I just installed Opera 12.17 on my Windows 7 laptop and it works fine.
Opera 15 is chrome based.

Hours after I posted, I realized that old versions of Opera would work fine on the new computer, but new versions of Opera wouldn't work on the old computer. I don't know why I got it backwards. Probably just because it's been so long since I've had to change anything. Butch has been a pretty good computer, so I haven't had to pay much attention to him (until he began slipping into his dotage.)

I still can't figure out if Chrome (and Chrome-based Opera versions) have a text search feature. I can't find it anywhere, and I use text search a lot. That's one of the main reasons I want to stick with an old version of Opera. Also some web sites behave very differently in Opera 21 (or maybe it's in Windows 7.) Flickr, for example, went from being merely distressing to being nightmarish.

I wonder what your objection is to Chrome. I've never used Opera, though. Maybe if I had, I'd have an idea!

Chrome lacks some features I use frequently, mainly the text search. I have Chrome, of course, but seldom use it. For the few web sites that don't get along with Opera I have Firefox, which I open once or twice a week. Also, Opera has a built-in e-mail client so I only have to open the one program when I go online.
