There is a very tall oak tree set among only slightly taller pines at the south end of my block. Its shiny green leaves have not yet begun to turn, and for much of the day they catch the sunlight and reflect it. Whenever a stiff breeze blows the leaves sparkle like dozens of flickering fairy lights.

I believe this tree tried to hypnotize me this afternoon, and maybe it succeeded, as watching it is about all I remember from a good part of the day. It's quite enjoyable to sit in the warm afternoon sun, being cooled by the breeze and watching the display of light. Sometimes it looks like water, so bright are the reflections.

I'm not sure why the tree wants to hypnotize me, but I doubt that it's up to no good. It's probably a very sympathetic tree and just wants me to relax. I intend not to worry about it unless my toes suddenly start trying to take root in the ground.

That sounds like something that happened in the LoTR. One of the hobbits got himself wrapped up by a tree and then was rescued by Tom Bombadil. If you know old Tom, though, you're safe even if your tree does turn out to be one of that type. ;)

Well, this tree isn't in my yard so I won't be anywhere near it and won't get swallowed (unless it can walk.) That could explain where a couple of the vanished feral cats ended up, though.

Yikes! The ferals need their own feline Tom Bombadil to help them out. (Walking trees would be ents, but I don't think they're hasty enough to swallow people and cats unless provoked.)
