Watching

The approaching storm has provided us with a splendid day. The sky is mostly cloudy, but the sun breaks through now and then to brighten the turning leaves that dance in the stiff breezes. The sky is not yet the uniform gray that is likely to prevail once the rain arrives, but richly variegated, with darker and lighter banks of thick clouds, patches of thin clouds that reveal a dimmed sun, and clusters of small clouds that rush along with the blue sky beyond them.

Once in a while the edges of some cloud bank will blaze out white as a nearby open area allows the full sunlight to reach it. All the time the fluttering leaves are singing, and the swift air smells of pine and the nearing rain that soon will fall. Birds are singing ecstatically. They sound as delighted as I feel.

I'm going back outside now to watch it some more.

I've been so preoccupied with horrible political news that this storm has taken me by surprise. Suddenly the manager of the building has put up warning notes and set out flashlights and glow sticks, and the local weather says Saturday could be the worst in 50 years, omg, we're all gonna die! Welp. It's been nice knowing you. ;)

It's expected to get pretty intense here, too, though we'll be more to the edge than Seattle will be. The weather service is predicting up to four inches of rain in the mountains from the first storm, and another four from the second. It's probably going to be too warm to provide any snow.

It will also be getting windy enough to knock down trees, so there could be power outages. I just hope it isn't too intense on Sunday or I won't be able to go shopping. But at lest I've got plenty of soup on hand, and I can heat it on the gas stove.
