While siting in the back yard on a balmy Wednesday afternoon, I heard two large flocks of waterfowl flying over the neighborhood. There was no point in trying to see them as the giant bush devouring the fence has grown so large that it blocks almost all view of the sky. If I get up and go to the other end of the yard I can see a bit, but not enough to make it worth the effort. Soon that end of the yard will be sprouting this years volunteer poke weed crop, and then I'd need a machete to get down there, so I wouldn't bother trying. But the point is that the birds are getting the hell out of California. I don't know if it's because they think it already must be spring where they are heading or because the places they hang out here have already dried up due to the shortage of rain.

Speaking of short things, a few days of short sleep caught up with me Wednesday evening and I had to take a nap shortly after nine o'clock. I woke about half past eleven, but still felt tired so got back into bed and catnapped off and on for a couple more hours. This is bound to have an impact on today's sleep, but I don't know yet what it will be. Usually this leads to a few days of instability before I temporarily slip into a new pattern, though the sort of pattern it will be is not predictable. Very little is predictable anymore.

I need to arrange for acquiring some groceries sometime today. I've been meaning to do it for several days, but my ever-worsening lack of focus and organization has been getting in the way. I'm out of orange juice, bread, and donuts, and will soon be out of milk and chocolate and a few other things. Converting beverages into urine and food into feces with myself as an inconsequential byproduct is just an endless task. I can't help but feel that the system could have been designed better. And I think that that may be sign that I should be trying to get back to sleep now. Light is coming into the sky already. I thought we were supposed to be saving that for evening.
