Almost every time I went out this afternoon a squirrel barked at me. A lot of them are active now, because large numbers of acorns have begun to drop. Almost every breeze brings a clatter as the ripe nuts whack rooftops and roll down. The sound of acorns falling makes the day feel entirely autumnal, despite the lingering heat.

The peach tree, and the dogwoods across the street as well, have begun to show color. The jasmine is down to half a dozen surviving blossoms, though its glossy leaves will remain green all winter. I hope that rain will arrive soon, and then the lawn will become green too. The first year I lived here the heavy rains began in September, so it is not impossible that October will turn wet. I can hardly wait to smell the soggy leaves decaying!
