No entry yesterday. About 12:40, an oak tree up the block dropped a huge limb and took out the utility lines. The wires were yanked so hard that the nearest pole split at the top and a cross beam came down with part of the pole still attached. An old transformer on the pole also fell, and because of its toxic contents a hazardous waste team had to come out to remove it. There were crews coming and going for hours. There was damage to wires along the entire block.

Surprisingly, the telephone continued to work, and once power was restored the cable was also functioning even though some of the coax is still sitting atop some low trees at the opposite end of the block from where the limb fell. The power came back on about three o'clock this morning. What was left of the damaged pole got a temporary repair, but it will have to be replaced soon, which will probably mean another outage, but at least we'll probably get an advance warning for that.

I was without Internets for more than fourteen hours! I think I deserve one of those "I survived..." t-shirts. Too bad the ice cream in my freezer didn't survive. Stupid tree.
