One of the fires northeast of here decided to uncontain itself yesterday, and this morning the sunrise was as red as the sunsets were a couple of weeks ago when the fires were burning in the coast range. The air is heavy with smoke, and it reeks. Visibility is about half a mile. If this keeps up, August could be a stinking month.

Several hot, dry days lie ahead, and those are the sort of days when fires are difficult to contain. Fires in the rugged canyons and ridges of the Sierra are hard to contain in any case, but the weather is going to make it even worse. I'm hoping we get the usual shift of winds this afternoon so the air can get a bit cleaner. This smoke would breathing unpleasant even without its odor.

It's the devil's barbecue!
