Waking up at three o'clock this morning I found the pavement wet and the air full of mist. Because the moon is still near full, the cloudy night was glowing with its pale light. The cool air smelled of damp earth and trees. I remained awake for a few hours and heard the mist turn to showers and then to a steady rain at dawn. Being short of sleep, I napped for a while, and then woke in time to see to a brief, late morning downpour. The rest of the day was mostly intermittent showers.

The evening has turned chilly, and I've had to turn the furnace on. It hasn't been on for a few months, and is smelling the way a furnace not used for a few months smells, but the rain was worth it. The smell will go away in a while, and in the meantime I can go outside for a and enjoy the quite, damp night. Tomorrow ought to be dry, but there could be more rain on Wednesday. Summer is broken, and just in time for the Autumnal Equinox.
