Obsolete

It's April 9, and I am now running an officially obsolete operating system on my obsolete computer. Microslough has ended support for XP, and Butch is to old to work with more recent Windows versions that are still supported. His feeble memory can't handle them. I'm imagining goatloads of malware, trojans, and viruses loading themselves onto the hard drive every time I click a link. I guess I'll have to replace him, but there's not enough money in the bank to do that yet. Maybe I can find something refurbished somewhere. In the meantime I'll probably just avoid all but the few web sites I'm accustomed to visiting regularly, and hope I don't get hijacked.

As if Butch didn't have enough to deal with already, this afternoon there was a brief power outage and he got shut down the bad way. Maybe PG&E got some malware on the computers they use to control the flow of power. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they were still running XP too.

This morning I happened to get up just before dawn, and when I went out back to feed the feral cats the sun was just reaching the yard. There were strands of spider silk running from the trees to the fence, and with the light behind them they shimmered and fluttered in the soft morning breeze. The light seemed to run along them, short bands of it chasing one another up to the trees. As the sun got higher, different strands of silk would pick up the light while others would vanish as the light left them. I was astonished at how many strands there were. Now when I go into the yard I'm going to be thinking of all that silk above my head, and all the spiders who made it. They must still be around somewhere. I hope they don't decide to jump on my head as a pass by.

It was another balmy day, but tomorrow it is supposed to get into the eighties. A heat wave in early March is not welcome, but there's nothing I can do about it. I'll probably have to keep the windows closed most of the afternoon. And I was just getting used to having them open! The weather service is now saying that late next week it should cool off and there might even be more rain. I'd like that very much, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Now I'm going to shut down my obsolete computer and go watch my tube television.

Ah, the technological world is just passing me by!
