The onset of heat has been rapid. Today I had to close my windows early, and the inside temperature of the house still rose to 73 degrees by nightfall. Tomorrow is to be hotter still, so I have to cool it off tonight, but I doubt I can get it below what it was last night, which means it could get up to around 75 or 76 in here by tomorrow evening. Fortunately there should be a cooling trend over the weekend, and there might even be more rain, but the arrival of hot weather so early in the season is distressing nonetheless.

Still, the heat should have a positive side, namely the blooming of all those rose buds, which I expect to happen very soon. The rose bed should be an impressive sight if they all begin opening at once. There are still lilacs blooming, too, so the back yard could be quite colorful for a few days. The jasmine might bloom early this year as well, scenting the yard sometime in May, rather than in June. Milder nights will keep the furnace from running, reducing next month's utility bill— as long as it doesn't get so hot that I need to use the air conditioner. I'll put that off as long as possible.

Today's supermarket ads were not encouraging. Next to nothing I buy is on sale. That's been happening a lot since Safeway was bought out by Albertson's. They haven't changed the name of the store, but apparently the policy is gradually being shifted. We just got rid of Albertson's here a few years ago, and I'd hate to see it back. I never liked that store.

The wind died down with the arrival of heat, and what wind we are getting tonight is coming down from the desert, and is quite warm. It's actually very nice outside now, so I've been spending more time on the porch than in the house. This would be a good time to have a laptop or notebook, so I could take the Internets outside with me. I'd be at greater risk of mosquito bites, of course, but going in and out frequently increases the odds that the bugs will get indoors, too, so it's probably six of one and half a dozen of the other. I haven't been bitten yet, but it's inevitable.

Sleep was odd again. I got up early, but then had a very long nap this evening. I suppose I should eat something, but the heat has reduced my appetite. I still have some asparagus, so maybe I'll have that with some garlic toast. I'll probably get hungry again later and end up making popcorn at three o'clock in the morning. Ah, spring.
