Hunting down the vacuum cleaner I want on Kohl's web site, I'm interrupted by a sudden blackness of the monitor. A freaking power outage! Great timing, Piggy! (Piggy is my two-syllable diminutive fir the utility company PG&E.) But now I can't do anything. Can't cook, can't listen to music, can't take a shower, because everything depend on electricity. Fortunately my phone still had a fairly decent charge, so I was able to get Piggy's texts about the outage. The first one estimated power restoration by 4:45 in the afternoon. It was barely past noon.
I settled in for a long hiatus. Afternoon light from the window meant I could read, so I settled down on the bed with the latest Harpers, and, not surprisingly, soon fell asleep. The bleeping of the phone woke me, and Piggy's text said power had been restored at 3:09. Turning on the bedside lamp revealed the truth of the claim, so I rebooted the computer, which was cranky from having been shut down suddenly, and it wasn't until almost four that I finally found my way back to the right page at Kohl's web site and finally managed to order my vacuum. It will be delivered between the 8th and the 11th, which seems a long wait, but then the time of year and all that, so maybe not so bad. I am impatient though. Now that it's on its way I'm checking everywhere and finding dust that I want to be rid of. Funny I didn't notice it before.
Anyway, the online shopping wore me out, and then fixing a large dinner brought further wear, and I forgot to recharge the phone again and around ten o'clock I lost Internet. I had a piece of music loaded on the hard drive, so I put it on loop and went in to relax on the bed for a while, until I ha enough of a charge to reboot the phone and reconnect to the web. And then I fell asleep. I woke up a couple of times, but it always seemed to me that only a few minutes had passed. The music continued to play from the other room, and I would go back to sleep. Finally I had to pee and got up, and checked the phone which now had a 100% charge. I'd slept longer than I'd thought.
But I didn't realize how much longer until I rebooted the phone, and when the clock appeared it was half past two in the morning. I'd slept more than four hours. Now I'll be awake past dawn, and it will be hard to get to sleep again. Or maybe not, because nothing is quite the way it used to be. In fact this morning y biggest problem might be getting my legs to carry me all the way back to the bedroom. They've been quite achy. Well, I'm about to find out. It's gotten a bit chilly overnight again, ad I want to be under my warm covers.
