Reset Forty-Eight, Day Thirty-Nine
Apr. 4th, 2023 06:22 amMonday I didn't feel like cooking any of the things I had on hand, or even making another sandwich, so following quite a long evening nap I microwaved a pack of yakisoba noodles. They turned out to be a tad too spicy, and my next nap was ended by a bout of acid reflux. It has taken a few hours for that to calm down, and I just had a bedtime snack of buttered toast, which I hope will both prevent hunger from keeping me awake and be mild enough to keep the reflux at bay.
Having been miserable much of the night, I spent most of it with my most effective distraction, music. I am pleased that someone who was missing from YouTube for several years, probably due to copyright issues, has returned, though I don't know for how long. It's the singer Kenny Rankin, who spent much of his career making very good renditions of jazz standards, including this 1936 song with music by Oscar Levant and lyrics by Eddie Heyman. Levant is best known as a pianist (a leading interpreter of George Gershwin's works), and as a comic actor (important roles in" Gene Kelley's An American In Paris" and Fred Astaire's "The Band Wagon".) Heyman is known for several classic lyrics, including "Body and Soul", "Out of Nowhere" and "I Cover the Waterfront", all with composer Johnny Green. and "Love Letters" and "When I Fall In Love" with composer Victor Young. This song, "Blame It On My Youth" is one of Heyman's less well known songs, but probably Levant's best known composition. As far as I know this was the only time they worked together, which is too bad.
