Friday's grocery fetchage was accomplished, with a few hitches, and was, as always, exhausting. Ordering online was tedious, and Safeway's web site screwed up at the end. There is an option for setting substitution preferences, and after I spent about twenty minutes doing that their system got hung up. It was spinning its little wheel for several minutes, while I cursed it because I wanted to get to sleep, and when it finally stopped and let me proceed to the checkout page, I thought it had actually registered my preferences, but it turns out it hadn't. When I finally got the order there were substitutions I hadn't asked for, rather than the ones I had.

I also ended up spending more than I'd expected, partly due to a misunderstanding about how certain coupons worked, and partly due to an earlier website fail, when I tried to cash in a few store rewards and the page wouldn't let me, and then I forgot that it hadn't worked and shopped as though I had those rewards. Annoying, but now I'll have extra rewards to cash in next time, assuming they get their system fixed and let me do it.

So I had plenty of foods Friday night, but I didn't fix dinner because I was tired and because my acid reflux was acting up again, so I just munched a few raw almonds and went for a nap, and the nap turned into several hours of sleep. So here I am awake in the morning again. So what will I do with this day? Spend lots of money on air conditioning or swelter, I guess. It's going to be 107. Slightly good news is that the long range forecast has moderated, and if it holds then next Thursday is only going to get up to 93. That's about normal for this time of year. Signs and wonders!

I can't let the death of Tony Bennett go without mention. While I do have earlier music memories, one of my earliest and clearest is of his first Chart-topping hit record, "Because of You," which was released in 1951, when I was six years old. We moved to a new house that year, and one of my earliest memories of that place is sitting in the den at the back with the view out over the valley to the San Gabriel Mountains, listening to the evening radio show "Your Hit Parade," and hearing Tony Bennett's #1 song at the end of the countdown.

It was the beginning of one of the longest careers in music, and as other singers who were popular then retired or died or faded into obscurity, Tony plodded along, still performing and recording year after year, until he was truly the last of his kind. Like sun and moon and seasons, he has always been there, part of my life, even if not consciously noticed every day. It's going to be very strange without him. So long, big guy. Thanks for all the music.
