The noise from the plumbing work done in the next apartment Monday morning turned out not to be as bad as I expected, and I was able to get quite a bit of sleep, though it was interrupted a few times. The concrete floor was broken up with some tool smaller than a full jackhammer, and it was apparently electric so didn't require a compressor. The whole job was done by three in the afternoon, too, and I got my hot water back. I'm a bit disappointed that the work didn't restore the historic water pressure we once had here. The flow is still rather weak, though passable. I'm now thinking there might be a leak in my hot water line too, though if so I haven't seen any seepage anywhere.

It might be that the ground in the region is settling due to over-extraction of water from the aquifers. This has been happening for a very long time in the San Joaquin valley, with dire consequences, but large scale irrigation has been a significant feature of the north valley for only about forty years, since the almond industry began its rapid expansion. Almonds are one of the thirstiest tree crops, and use tremendous amounts of water. The industry's profits have also funded much of the expansion of the mini-metropolis over that time, and we suck most of our domestic water out of the ground as well (no pun intended.)

Anyway, the aquifer should be getting a decent recharging this month. It probably won't rain today, but it's expected to start overnight and continue most of tomorrow. Farther south they had some fog this morning, but we didn't get any. Wan sunlight is even breaking through our clouds now and then. I'm watching a small flock of a dozen or so tiny birds flutter in and out of the bushes that cover my tall back fence. They are apparently finding things to eat— probably aphids or other small insects.

I've been eating too, but no bugs (at least not whole ones.) I've had a donut and a bran muffin, and currently am sucking in a Necco wafer, but I really ought to find something more substantial to eat. Although I was up by four o'clock this morning I don't think I'll be getting back to sleep any time soon. I had some coffee with that muffin, and that's sure to keep me awake. I expect I'll crash around mid-afternoon, and then sleep until dusk. I shouldn't have to worry about my mail getting wet this afternoon. Showers aren't expected until later tonight. Though I might have a hot shower sooner. I've missed those for three days.
