Though I tried to be careful about what I ate, Tuesday brought a reflux flareup. That and some severe leg cramps prevented me from getting much rest overnight, and now I'm awake and bleary in a coolish and partly cloudy morning, eating raw almonds instead of my usual breakfast. Almonds are one of the few foods that can tamp down reflux for me. It's a good thing I like them, though they are tedious to chew. When I was a kid my mom was always nagging me to chew nuts thoroughly. I can still hear her saying "chew it good, tykie!" And my response, "dammit mom, I'm twenty six! Will you please stop calling me tykie?!"

Today is supposed to get into the mid-nineties, so only moderately hellish. Full-on hell arrives next week, so I'm trying to enjoy this brief period of semi-misery as much as possible, saving my voice for the agonized screams I'll be emitting when we return to triple digit highs and sultry nights. The morning breeze I feel coming through the window right now is almost pleasant, and I'll regret closing it off in a few minutes, but it's getting into the seventies outside already, and it being 75 in here there'll be no point in blowing 73 or 74 into the room. I think I'll go read paper for a while and maybe nod off and catch up some of the sleep I missed while feeling my stomach burn and walking off leg cramps all night.

I'm thinking about rain a lot these dry days. Locally (about twenty miles away) we've got our first big brush fire of the season, though the smoke hasn't headed my way yet, so I can still breathe. A nice rainstorm to put it out would be good, but of course we won't get one. But here's pre-Beatles pop icon Neil Sedaka with his 1974 surprise comeback song "Laughter In the Rain." If only.
