As I predicted, I slept through the New Year's Eve midnight noise. I wasn't sure how late it was when I first woke up, but lying there the night seemed too quiet for the hours leading to midnight. In several minutes I only heard one pair of explosions, like a punctuation mark at the end of a sentence. Exclamation! And then I nodded off again, and waking later I listened again to an even deeper quiet, and after some time decided to sit up and check the time on the phone, expecting it to be perhaps between two and three, but it was already half past five. It had been a deep sleep indeed.

Another hour or so of catnaps and I found myself dragged from bed by a growing hunger and the thought of my waiting donut, and ventured into the chilly dark of a new day not yet dawned. Since then I've watched the sky grow pale, but it still hasn't become a visible dawn thanks to another overcast. There might be showers later. I'll welcome them without regret, as it is a holiday and no mail will be delivered to ruin. And there is actual rain predicted for Friday, for which I should be even gladder.

But after that there is a serious WTF in the weather forecast: A whole string of days with highs in the sixties. One day will be as high as 66. This would be fairly normal for Los Angeles in January, but not for the Sacramento Valley. Such highs would be extravagant even for late autumn here. and there is very little chance for rain. Unless it changes, this could be the onset of a serious catastrophe. In my more than a third of a century in this region I've seen nothing like this. I really hope this forecast is mistaken. The only thing about it that might benefit me is I'll be saving a bundle on the gas bill, and that's trivial compared to what could happen to food prices if California's agriculture has to cut back production to save water.

So it's overcast here, but I don't know what it's like in Pasadena today. I tried to watch a stream of the Rose Parade, but couldn't get it to work. I think I saw it last year, but don't remember for sure. Maybe I'll be able to fetch a rerun later today. At the moment I'm thinking about washing the dishes left from two days ago and then maybe fixing an actual cooked breakfast of some kind. I haven't been feeling very good for the last few days, and in fact just sneezed and hurt myself (what the hell is that about?) Maybe I'll make some pancakes. No eggs for waffles. Maybe the stores will have some back on the shelves Friday. I won't count on it though.
