Lately, I find myself liking beer less than I used to. I've never drunk a great deal of it at one sitting, except for a couple of unpleasantly memorable occasions, but I have drunk it fairly regularly with dinner, and sometimes lunch, and once in a while with late night snacks, since I was about 18 or 19. That's a lot of beer. A few weeks ago, I made some popcorn, and grabbed a bottle of porter from the refrigerator, and suddenly thought no, that's not what I want, even though that usually is what I want. I ended up drinking carrot juice, instead. Since then, this has happened several times. I drink apple cider or carrot juice or something else when I would once have had beer. Tonight, when I was pouring a bottle of Sierra Nevada at dinner, I thought a glass of red wine would be nice for a change. Hmmm. Is there something like beeropause?

You've probably been slowly going off beer for quite some time, but force of habit is very strong (this is part of the reason why some people become unecessarily overweight, they snack out of habit, even if not hungry). A few weeks ago, your dislike for beer (or, more accurately, the difference between your taste for beer now and when you most liked it) finally equalled the force of habit. This is why the idea of not having your habitual beer had not even occured to you before. I'm not saying you'll never drink beer again but you'd probably do well to think more carefully about what you actually want rather than going on autopilot and letting force of habit take the decisions.
