What mushroom did we eat?

When I started this journal in late June, I got account #210,624. The other day I came across a new journal with a number over 323,000. I'm not too good with statistics, but this seems to indicate that LJ will be doubling in size in a bit over every three months. If this continues, there will be over a million of us sometime early next year. True, many journals seem to have been abandoned, and many others are infrequently updated, but this rate of growth still portends an incredible increase in demand for bandwidth. Where the hell is it coming from? I can understand the popularity of the site; I think it has the best assortment of features of any weblog. But I worry that Brad and the guys will never be able to keep up with the demands placed on them by this growth. Today, I was unable to log on for several hours, even in the client. Sometimes I get the feeling we've all hopped on a Tokyo commuter train at rush hour. Maybe we need pushers to cram us all in.

I agree, this site is becoming a bit of a victim of it's own success.

I notice that nearly all the search and database functions have been scaled down (or deleted) to accomadate the user increase but I guess that type of action will only take you so far.

Cetainly access to the site has become very problematic over the past few months and I am sorry to say that the problems seems to get worse as time goes on.

I have heard it rumoured that Brad F may actually sell the site, it would be interesting to see what happens there.

I would rather see the site incorporated as a non-profit organization than sold to a commercial outfit. There are too many sites that are all advertising, all the time. And I don't think Brad really wants to sell, anyway. He's just frustrated about all the things he has to do that are not writing code.

I agree, I would hate for this site to be taken over by a corporate organisation with all the issues that would come with it and I think that Brad would be reluctant to sell.

Interesting. I notice that there has been a drop in the rate of new journal creation in the last few days- potential new users getting the "overload" message, I guess. A self-correction for for the site. If you don't build it, they won't come. ;)

Not luck. You are on the opposite side of the world from most LJ users. When you login, most of them are asleep. When you are asleep, the site is crowded.
