When I get overtired, odd questions come into my mind. Pointless questions. Questions the answers to which I don't actually need. So I've made a poll about one one of these questions that popped into my head tonight. I've heard all these various phrases used by various people. I suspect that they might be regional. The facts are undoubtedly of no consequence whatsoever. I submit that this fact makes this a perfect Live Journal poll.

I love to point out to people who say "close the light" that since it's an electrical circuit, closing it is actually what turns it on.

"Break the circuit on that light" doesn't have quite the same kick.

Turn off, put out, but my husband says "close." Definitely regional. When he says "close the light," I ask, "Is it open?" But then he stands "on" line, not "in" line, too. (There is no painted line to stand on, though there is occasionally one to stand behind. Perhaps the lines are imaginary. He also used to say "put up" for "make," as in food. "Is the soup up yet?"!!
