Rumble, rumble

Not surprisingly, a hot first day of autumn, but with big, brooding clouds. With nightfall, flashes of lightning in the west, and the sound of distant thunder. I must secure the plastic bag which I have taped over my telephone junction box, in case there is rain. Wet junction box eliminates my internet connection.) And, if the storm draws near, I must go off line, as I have no proper surge protection. There is almost always trouble with the power here, when a thunderstorm arises. But I can read the October issue of National Geographic, which arrived today. It has an article on the volcanos of northern California, and I like to keep up with what my neighbors are doing. Hey, Mount Lassen, ready to blow?

there is much I want to know about the geography and history of california. I need to go to the bookstore and spend some bucks...

Sample some of the available books at the history and geneology department of the L.A. central library. There is a very impressive collection of California history. They also have a rare treasure- several historic Sanborn Fire Insurance Atlases. These oversized volumes show the locations and uses of, and construction information on, buildings in the central city for several years in the early decades of the 20th century. They are a very interesting bit of history, probably unavailable anywhere else.
