Sacramento's PBS station is re-running Ken Burns' Jazz series, and I got hung up watching it until four in the morning. Not enough time to do anything else, now- and well worth it.
pbs always captures me in the wee morning hours. commercial free splendor. most notably was the time i watched jesus christ superstar and had to pee. i watched the whole thing waiting for a commercial.
PBS is handy to have around. When I first moved to northern California, and before I got cable, the Sacramento PBS affiliate was the only channel on the air all night. But, instead of their regular programming, they did something called a "Block broadcast," which consisted of educational programs shown in blocks of several episodes at a time, so that teachers could videotape them while they slept. I spent about a year watching programs on math, science, spanish, history; all sorts of stuff, mostly for high school students. One of the things they showed was the Voyage of the Mimi series, with the unknown Ben Affleck, about ten or twelve years old. Later, when he became famous, I sort of felt as though I had discovered him- which is one reason I wouldn't mind a chance to slap him around a bit for some of the crap he's made. Ah, PBS. :)
Yes, that cute little big-toothed kid who went off sailing with his grandfather was Ben Affleck. There was also a second Mimi series, when he was a few years older. It was filmed largely in Mexico. I actually enjoyed those programs, and it was probably the best acting Ben has ever done.
