As the night passed, I noted a change in the sound of the rain. Near the south end of the house, there was a splashing that grew steadily louder even though the rainfall remained constant. I could hear it clearly even though my window was barely open. I went out to look, and found that the water cascading from the roof of the neighboring house had eroded enough earth to create a new small pond below their eaves. The clatter it makes is really quite remarkable. Now, each downpour makes it sound as though I lived next to a waterfall. Come to think of it, I guess I do now live next to a waterfall. Ah, how musical it is!

Date: 2006-04-11 07:59 pm (UTC)and thanks for the tip on the book by James J. McHugh, i just ordered it.
i looked back and read your entry, "Photograph."
it was amazing. i knew exactly what you were describing, without any names. we had an article in the school newspaper a couple years ago about the history of Monterey Park.it was full of details and interesting tidbits and historical facts.
like how 500 KKK members were initiated along Garvey Ave. But a lot's changed since then--ever since the city founders put out Ads for Monterey Park, which spread all the way to Hong Kong.
The rest is history.
Who knew that one mailman's dream would become Asain-Capital, USA?

Date: 2006-04-13 02:04 pm (UTC)I'd never heard about the KKK initiation, but it doesn't surprise me that it happened. I know there was a period of great hysteria in the years around WWI and into the 1920's, and the Klan gained a huge number of members at that time, especially in small towns and suburbs.
When I was a kid, there were still a number of cranky old guys around the area who were probably among those initiated then. They used to tell us that the Reds were going to take over the country at any time because nobody had listened to Senator McCarthy's warnings. Heh. I'm still waiting for those Russian tanks to show up.
